MGA Alumni Turn the Full Circle from Delegates to Mentors

MGA Alumni Turn the Full Circle from Delegates to Mentors
By: Ellie Dorsey – YMCA Arlington - Yorktown

Two Model General Assembly Alumni, Connor and KC, return to Richmond as advisors of Broadwater Academy located in Exmore, Virginia. Having been former Model General Assembly and CONA attendees, their presence in the Capital and Pocahontas chambers this weekend is highly appreciated and treasured. Model General Assembly is known around the Commonwealth for harvesting the debate skills of high school students and developing their leadership and interests in politics. In addition, this program also prides itself on the commitment of its attendees, especially those who continue to participate in the program and share their love of debate with others. These experienced alums add depth to this program through past involvement, mentorship and perspective.

Not only are these two gentlemen incorporating the skills they learned from MGA into their mentorship of the students at Broadwater, but they are also implementing them into their careers and daily life. Connor emphasized this point by adding that “MGA helped shape what I wanted to do and what I wanted to studied in my career”.

When asked how important MGA is for students to learn how to participate in debate and immerse oneself in politics, KC responded with, “It is incredibly important especially in this political climate. Learning to civilly talk and express ideas in a friendly and enjoyable way is incredibly impactful”.

MGA has allowed these two gentlemen to become passionate and involved in the world of politics. Their shared love for debate and their strong belief that students should be equipped with important discussion skills combined to create qualified and skillful mentors. KC and Connor’s goal is to empower and enable the delegates and senators to “find their voice” and be fearless.
